Thinking About Marriage?
If you are in a binational relationship, you may be considering getting married in Massachussets or Canada to resolve your immigration situation. Sadly, the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 (DOMA) defines that for federal purposes marriage is only between a man and a woman. Since immigration is a federal matter, your marriage will not help you with your immigration problems. If you are thinking about getting married regardless, please contact an immigration attorney before doing so. Having a spouse in the U.S. signifies an intent to remain in the country, and depending on your visa situation, this may actually hurt you.
